Scuola Digitale @ Macerata

Machine learning meets neuroscience

The following paper published in Scientific Reports (Nature) discloses some scientific outcomes of the current research:

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-018-31479-2

The research activity is the results of a collaboration between the PostDoc Luca Romeo and the Cognition, Motion and Neuroscience and Computational Statistics and Machine Learning Department, Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Genova, Italy.

In the mentioned study, the authors applied pattern-classification analyses to kinematic features to verify whether children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and typically developing (TD) children altered their initial grasp in anticipation of self- and other-actions.

GNB 2018 PhD award

Dr. Sara Moccia has been awarded with the “GRUPPO NAZIONALE DI BIOINGEGNERIA & PATRON" prize for the best Italian PhD thesis in Bioengineering (http://www.premignb2018.it/) with a thesis entitled "SUPERVISED TISSUE CLASSIFICATION IN OPTICAL IMAGES: TOWARDS NEW APPLICATIONS OF SURGICAL DATA SCIENCE”.

Sara pursued her PhD at the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering at Politecnico di Milano and at the Department of Advanced Robotics at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia.

Congratulations Sara!

Computer Science & Geomatics @ Barcelona

Professor Eva Savina Malinverni, Dr. Marina Paolanti and Dr. Roberto Pierdicca have been invited by Professor Montserrat Pallares Barbera to share their research and their projects at the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona. In particular, they have described their results through seminars entitled "Open Big and Spatial Data Collected Stored and Retrieved by Open Gis Tool and their applications" and "Urban Social Media Analytics".

Augmented Reality Summer School (AVR)

PhD Student Andrea Felicetti attended the Augmented Reality Summer School (AVR) held in Torre dell'Orso (Lecce), Italy on 2-8 September, 2018.

The main aim of the Augmented Reality Summer School has been to propose a moment for stimulating discussions and exchanging scientific experiences and technical results related to this technology. The main thematic areas of the Augmented Reality Summer School has been: medicine, cultural heritage and arts, education, games and serious games.

IAPR Summer School on Machine and Vision Intelligence (VISMAC)

PhD Students Andrea Felicetti, Alessandro Galdelli and Raffaele Vaira attended the IAPR Summer School on Machine and Vision Intelligence (VISMAC) held in Vico Equense (Naples), Italy on 27-31 August, 2018.

Organized by the CVPRLab of the departtment of Science and Technology, University of Naples Parthenope. The school provided in-depth courses of the state-of-the-art research in Artificial Intelligence, and specifically Deep Learning, for Computer Vision with a global scope aiming at updating participants about the fundamentals and most recent advances of different deep learning architectures, which were explained through three types of mainstream applications, to image processing, pattern recognition and computer vision.

MISS Medical Imaging Summer School

PhD Student Michele Bernardini attended the Medical Imaging Summer School (MISS) held in Favignana (Italy) on 29 Jul - 04 Aug, 2018. More than 150 participants attended this school.

The focus of this Medical Imaging Summer School was to provide insights into the various interfaces between medical imaging and Deep Learning, based on the shared broad categories of medical image computing, computer-aided image interpretation and disease classification.

The course contained a combination of in-depth tutorial-style lectures on fundamental state-of-the-art concepts, followed by accessible yet advanced research lectures using examples and applications. A broad overview of the field was given, and guided reading groups complemented lectures. The course was delivered by world renowned experts from both academia and industry, who are working closely at the interface of medical imaging/Deep Learning.

ICPR2018 @ BEIJING

Dr. Marina Paolanti attended at ICPR 2018. She has presented the following paper:

  • Liciotti, D., Paolanti, M., Pietrini, R., Frontoni, E., & Zingaretti, P. (2018). Convolutional Networks for semantic Heads Segmentation using Top-View Depth Data in Crowded Environment.

The 24th International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR2018) sponsored by the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR), was at the China National Convention Center, Beijing, during August 20-24, 2018. The conference has provided an international forum for researchers and practitioners in the broad area of pattern recognition, including pattern recognition and machine learning, computer vision, speech, image, video and multimedia, biometrics and human computer interaction, document analysis and recognition, biomedical imaging and bioinformatics.
